and in my bridal flight, exultant as it was,
I tore through summer’s delicate veils of dark …
In hymen’s fleeting kiss, I was the lover
of Night, her long hair twined with violets,
tobacco flowers opening their chalices
of ivory, where stirring memories slumbered.
And I saw, higher still, the Pleiades …
I rose … I reached the edge of the Eternal Silence …
when I exploded, in a rainbow’s violence,
blasting gold and jade and onyx beams …
I was the shattered dream, the vanquished light …
Having known the battle’s ardent call,
the victory, the monstrous terror of the fall,
